Grain Oriented Electrical Steel

Grain oriented electrical steel consists of a Silicon iron alloy with a body-centered cubic lattice. The cube edge of the crystals are the direction of the easiest magnetization and the lowest core loss.

The concept of orienting grains in magnetically favourable direction was discovered by N.P.Goss. The corresponding texture (110), <001> is referred as Goss texture, also called Cube-on-Edge (COE)

GO steels are produced under carefully controlled conditions to develop optimum magnetic properties in the rolling direction. GO steel develops low core loss at high induction levels when used as a core material in designs with flux path parallel to rolling direction. This contributes to low core loss in the transformers.
